Port #15 – Ottawa, IL
After I got up this morning, Todd mentioned that Joliet has one of the highest murder rates per capita in the United States. Golly, that made me feel good. (I checked the statistics online. On a scale of 1 to 100 with 100 being the best or least amount of violent crime, Joliet ranked 19!)
We were up at 4:45AM and off the wall by 7:30AM. We made the railroad bridge while it was up but missed the McDonough Street Bridge. The bridge attendant finally answered our request for information and verified the height at 16.5 feet. About that time the railroad bridge dropped down for a train. Caught between the two bridges, we drifted around for 45 minutes.
Next up was the Brandon Road Lock. Feeling pretty much like a pro, I put on my working life vest and got with the program. It was hurry up and wait. A tow and barge were in the lock, so we floated around for another 45 minutes or so.

Phalarope locked through with us at Dresden Road and caught this picture of OB coming out of the lock...

We pulled into the Free City Dock at Ottawa, IL at 6:30PM…and docked behind Phalarope again. We finally got to visit with Peter and Alex, a very nice couple from Plymouth, MA.
The owner of Heritage Harbor happened by and gave us a ride to the grocery store to pick up a few necessities. We have been so fortunate to meet such nice folks along the way.
Ottawa was a nice change from Joliet. We had a quiet night with good rest…and both eyes closed.
